Cloth Diaper Lowdown

Yo! This is clearly my favorite subject;)

One of my goals was to try quite a few cloth diapers. So far I have tried: bumGenius 3.0 One size (OS) hook and loop, bumGenius 4.0 OS snaps and Velco, bumGenius 3.0 AIO stay dry diaper, Rumparooz G2, Rumparooz Li'l Joey, Grovia AI2, Fuzzi Buns OS, prefolds, Bumis Super Wisper wraps, Thirsties wraps, gDiapers with disposable inserts, and a few Etsy handmade cloth diapers.
Joey Bunz Hemp inserts and microfiber inserts.

K, so hears the lowdown on MY experience:

- LOVE BG OS 3.0. They are "Stay Dry", which is a MUST in my book. They hold the poop in great, they are fully adjustable. The OS are my "go to" diaper for night time, paired with their microfiber insert and a Joey Bunz Hemp insert, it lasts ALLLLL night long 8pm-8am, and his skin is STILL dry in the morning usually. No leaks!
- LOVE BG 4.0 OS with snaps they last longer than the hook and loop, but hook and loop is easier for out and about. Over time the hook and loop gets nasty looking and needs to be replaced, but they sell replacement hook and loop.
- LOVE BG AIO's for our "out and about" diaper. They are the ones I pack for church or when we will be gone for a while. They are VERY absorbent, usually go about 4 hours between changes, plus they are super easy to change, nothing to stuff, nothing to fold, they just whip right on with the Velcro! They do take FOREVER to dry though, but that's fine by me. They also have a pocket IF you want to stuff more in there, but I've never needed to. They come in sizes, so you have to buy SM and L. I've had very few accidents with these and they don't leak out the top when they sleep on their tummy.
- Rumparooz G2's are great too, but were very bulky on him when he was tiny, but they do fit a 7 pound baby! They are OS. They have great inside gussets to keep the poo in, only had MAYBE 2 accidents total with poo. They did leak when he was smaller when he was on his tummy, but I think that was because I didnt' have the right fit for him yet and I wasn't washing them with the right detergent. They work great now. They also come in cute prints. They are "stay dry" as well, but I feel the BG's keep him dryer.
- Don't waist your money on Li'l Joey's, they don't absorb well. but they are cute ;)
- Don't like Grovia AI2's, can't add absorbency very well, the insert isn't as soft as others. Have to change shell anyway when they poo.
- Dont' like Fuzzi Bunz Os, they leak for us. Their "pocket" isn't as wide, making it harder to stuff than other pockets, and you can't add much more for the absorbency.
- Don't like prefolds, just my opinion because they feel really wet. But they the most economical and easier to wash.
- Loved the Thirsties wrap with fitteds. The little gussets keep in the poo.
- Liked the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap too.
- Hated gDiapers with disposable inserts. I wanted to like them to use them when we go on vacation, but poo got on the inside liner every time.
- LOVE my Joey Bunz Hemp inserts for night time. They hold a TON when paired with a microfiber insert, making a TRIM night time dipe. You must prep them quite a few times before washing them with your regular dipes, or you will have repelling issues.

So basically in our experience, BG's are right for us. They can cause an ammonia smell if not properly washed, but once you get that down they are the best bang for our buck!

My top pick is bumGenius as well. I tried FuzziBunz and Happy Heinys, too, but after using them all on Bronson for a couple of months, I finished out my stash exclusively with bumGenius 3.0. I don't really need any more diapers at this point, so I haven't tried the 4.0s.

I use gDiapers when we're away from home for a long period of time (mostly on Saturdays), and also get so annoyed with how they hold up to poop. I usually end up just changing the whole diaper (cover & all), then replacing the plastic liner in the used cover so it's ready to go next time. Still, it's not as easy-breezy as the brand suggests. I do love the ability to flush the liners, though. No one else needs to deal with my child's soiled diapers lying around! :)

Hi Tracy and other mommys!

I just wanted to say we are cloth diaper lovers here as well!

My favorites for the day time are Bum Genius Elementals - they are trim, all in one, hold ALOT, very few leaks, and have snaps which have held up well and I know I am always getting the same fit. They do take FOREVER to dry....

At night we use Rumparooz with a Microfiber insert and a hemp insert. This lasts all night, 7pm to 7 am. We have rarely had a leak overnight and when we have, it has been early in the night (before about 10) - so probably due to user error. We use some snaps, and some with velcro which my husband likes best. The velcro is starting to get "used" on some of them (after about 5 months of use). We also use Rumparooz with 1 microfiber insert during the day. They stay very dry, but are a bit bulky.

Also, we used Lil Joeys in the very beginning, but not for very long. My son was about 6 lbs when we started cloth diapering, so we needed something itty bitty, and these worked for us. They are all in one, and so simple to put on, and I think they gave us some confidence that cloth diapers didn't have to be a challenge.

Tracy, thanks for such a thorough post, and I hope to hear what more moms are using :)
